Vishnu · Aarti

Om Jai Jagdish Hare

Composed in the nineteenth century by Shraddha Ram Phillauri and attributed in its closing verse to Shivananda Swami, this is the most universally sung Hindu aarti, offered to Vishnu as Jagdish, lord of the world. It concludes almost every household and temple worship in North India.

The text

Meaning in English

Victory to the Lord of the universe, who removes his devotees' troubles in an instant. Whoever meditates on him gains the fruit, the mind's sorrow dissolves, ease and plenty come home and bodily suffering ends. He is mother and father, the only refuge; the perfect supreme Self, the indweller, master of all; an ocean of compassion and the sustainer, before whom the singer confesses his own faults and asks to be lifted by the hand. The final verse promises that whoever sings this aarti gains the desired fruit.
