City by city
One festival, many homes. Switch cities for the top venues, addresses, trends and what to eat, from Kolkata's pandals to Ahmedabad's Garba grounds.
Where Durga Puja was born
Kolkata
Kolkata does not celebrate Durga Puja so much as surrender to it, with the whole city turning into an open-air gallery for five sleepless days and nights. Pandals compete fiercely on artistry and theme, so a single evening can carry you from a traditional ancestral idol to a full-scale replica of a foreign monument. The streets, the dhaak drums, the food stalls, and the crowds moving from pandal to pandal until dawn are the real show.
When to go
Maha Sashthi to Dashami, with Saptami, Ashtami and Navami evenings the peak nights for pandal hopping.
What to eat
Kathi rolls, phuchka, biryani, mishti like rosogolla and sandesh, and the community bhog of khichuri with labra and payesh.
