About this chant
The Navkar, or Namokar, is the foundational prayer of the Jain tradition, in the ancient Prakrit tongue. Rather than naming a deity, it offers reverence to five classes of enlightened and virtuous beings. It is understood as a bow to spiritual qualities themselves, and is chanted at the start of the day and before any auspicious act.
