Significance
The Durga Saptashati, also called the Chandi or Devi Mahatmya, is the seven hundred verse hymn to the Goddess recounting her victories over Mahishasura and other demons. Its recitation is the core devotional act of Navratri, undertaken for strength, protection, and the triumph of good over evil. The path is a worship of Shakti as the animating power of the universe, sung to invoke her fierce and nurturing grace.
How it is performed
Bathe, take the sankalp, and set up the altar with the image of Durga.
Light the akhand jyoti and worship Ganesha first.
Perform the preliminary nyasa and invoke the Goddess.
Recite the kavach, argala, and keelaka before the main chapters.
Chant the thirteen chapters of the Saptashati with devotion.
Offer red flowers, sindoor, and naivedya at the close.
Complete with the Devi Suktam, aarti, and pushpanjali.
