Significance
Griha Pravesh is the rite of first entering a new home, sanctifying the dwelling and its guardian energies before a family settles in. It combines the worship of Ganesha, the Vastu Purusha of the site, and a purifying havan so that the household begins in harmony. Performed on an auspicious muhurat, it is believed to fill the home with peace, protection, and prosperity.
How it is performed
Choose an auspicious muhurat and clean the new home fully.
Decorate the threshold with rangoli and hang a toran of mango leaves.
Enter with the right foot first, carrying the kalash, and take the sankalp.
Worship Ganesha, then the Vastu Purusha and the directional guardians.
Kindle the havan and offer oblations for peace and protection.
Boil milk in the kitchen until it rises over, a sign of overflowing abundance.
Perform the aarti, offer prasad, and welcome guests into the home.
The mantra
Om Vastoshpate Prati Janihyasman Svavesho Anamivo Bhava Nah
O Lord of the dwelling, recognise us and welcome us; be free of disease and full of well-being for us.
