Significance
Lakshmi is the goddess of wealth, abundance, and grace, worshipped for prosperity that is both material and spiritual. Her great night is Diwali, when homes are cleaned and lit with lamps to welcome her, though she is also honoured on Fridays and on Kojagari Purnima. The rite invites not only riches but the fuller fortune of health, contentment, and dignity.
How it is performed
Clean the home thoroughly and decorate the threshold with rangoli.
Bathe, take the sankalp, and set the kalash and images on a red-draped altar.
Worship Ganesha first, then invoke Lakshmi with her sixteen upacharas.
Offer lotus, sandalwood, akshat, and red cloth to the goddess.
Light the lamps around the home and offer sweets and kheer.
Recite the Shri Suktam or Lakshmi ashtottara and chant her mantra.
Perform the aarti and keep a lamp burning through the night.
