Mahamrityunjaya Havan
महामृत्युंजय हवन · মহামৃত্যুঞ্জয় হবন
Devoted to Shiva
Deity
Shiva
When to perform
In illness or for longevity
Significance
The Mahamrityunjaya Havan centres on the great life-restoring mantra of Shiva from the Yajurveda, offered into the sacred fire. It is kept for recovery from illness, for protection in times of danger, and for longevity and fearlessness. The mantra prays to be freed from the bondage of death as ripe fruit falls easily from the vine, not for immortality but for release into what is eternal.
How it is performed
Bathe, take the sankalp, and consecrate the havan kund.
Invoke Ganesha and then Shiva as Mrityunjaya.
Kindle the sacred fire and establish the deity of Agni.
Offer ghee oblations with each repetition of the Mahamrityunjaya mantra.
Complete the chosen count of ahutis, ideally in a round number such as 108.
Offer bilva leaves and honour Shiva throughout.
Conclude with the purnahuti, aarti, and a prayer for health and long life.
The mantra
Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamiva Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat
We worship the three-eyed Lord who is fragrant and nourishes all; may he free us from the bondage of death, as a ripe cucumber is freed from its stalk, and grant us immortality.
