During adverse planetary periods
Significance
The Navagraha Shanti propitiates the nine planetary influences of Vedic astrology, from the Sun and Moon to Rahu and Ketu. It is performed to soften a difficult planetary period (dasha), to steady a horoscope before a major step, or to relieve troubles traced to a specific graha. Each planet is worshipped with its own colour, grain, and mantra so that its influence turns benevolent.
How it is performed
Bathe, take the sankalp, and set up the navagraha altar or yantra.
Invoke Ganesha and the presiding deities of each planet.
Worship each of the nine grahas with its own colour, grain, and flower.
Kindle the sacred fire (havan) and offer oblations with each planet's mantra.
Offer the prescribed number of ahutis for the afflicting planet.
Recite the Navagraha Stotra and pray for their calm and favour.
Complete the purnahuti and distribute prasad.
