Significance
The Satyanarayan Vrat honours Vishnu as Satyanarayana, the Lord who is Truth itself. Families keep it to give thanks and to seek blessings at milestones such as a new home, a marriage, or a birth. Its heart is the recitation of five short chapters (the katha) that teach the fruit of devotion and the danger of breaking a vow, followed by the sharing of sanctified prasad.
How it is performed
Bathe and take the sankalp for the vrat, often keeping a fast until the puja.
Set the kalash and the image of Satyanarayana on the yellow-draped chowki.
Begin with the worship of Ganesha and the nine planets (navagraha).
Offer flowers, tulsi, sandalwood, incense, and the lamp to the Lord.
Recite the five chapters of the Satyanarayan Katha with full attention.
Offer the sheera prasad with tulsi and perform the aarti.
Distribute prasad to all present and share the blessings widely.
The mantra
Om Shri Satyanarayanaya Namah
I bow to the revered Satyanarayana, the Lord who is eternal Truth.
