Significance
Rudrabhishek is the ceremonial bathing of the Shiva Linga while the Rudram is chanted, honouring Shiva in his Rudra aspect. Each libation, whether water, milk, honey, or ghee, is offered with mantras that are believed to dissolve negativity and draw the grace of the Lord. It is among the most revered of Shaiva rites, performed for health, prosperity, and the removal of long-standing obstacles.
How it is performed
Bathe, wear clean clothes, and purify the space, then take the sankalp stating your intention.
Invoke Ganesha first for an unobstructed rite.
Install and consecrate the Shiva Linga on a clean altar.
Bathe the Linga in turn with water, milk, curd, honey, ghee, and sugar, chanting the Rudra mantra with each.
Perform the final abhishek with Gangajal, then wipe the Linga clean.
Offer bel leaves, white flowers, sandalwood, and bhasma.
Light incense and the lamp, offer naivedya, and conclude with camphor aarti and pushpanjali.
The mantra
Om Namah Shivaya
I bow to Shiva, the auspicious one, the innermost Self of all.
